What is Thermography and How Can We Use It?

  • What is Thermography?  Thermography is the study and analysis of infrared radiation (IR) emitted from objects (all objects emit IR, including you and me!) using a specialized camera, one that converts the retrieved infrared data and turns that data into visible images--complete with thermal/temperature data.

    • What Can We Do With This Data? From these images we can detect thermal anomalies that may point us to possible problems associated with structures, leakages, electrical systems, mechanical systems and their components, and even animals--the list goes on.

      • The beauty of thermography is that it is a non-invasive, non-destructive way of observing just about anything!

  • So, How Does Thermal Imaging Camera Work? The thermal imaging camera collects thermal-temperature data via its lens--a lens similar to a camera lens but altogether different in composition and function. In the field we call it Delta-T, or difference in temperature. The camera software takes in this thermal data and converts it to an image that we can recognize--similar to a digital photo but the image is represented in rainbow-like colors--blue = cold, orange, red, and white = warm to hot. We can use this information to interpret what may be going on with the object we are viewing.

  • What is the Importance of a Difference in Temperature--Delta-T? Without a difference in temperature on any given surface the image will have a monochrome (having one color) look to it. There is a science behind taking the images and interpreting the data gathered in the image. Therefore, the more Delta-T you have, the more vibrant the image and the more informative the data will be.

  • Can the Thermal Camera See Through Walls or Objects? No. Every object in existence emits thermal radiation, including you and me! The camera detects and measures thermal data on surfaces only. Now, you can use that data to interpret what may be going on behind that surface, like a potential water leak or air intrusion inside a wall.

  • What Can Thermography Do for Me, For Our Home, or Our Company? The simple answer is, a lot! It can save you MONEY! It can save you a considerable amount of time locating what is going on in your particular situation.

    • Having a thermal scan done can help you find the problems before they become big problems, before they eat at the bottom line--your wallet!

    • A thermal scan, and, even better, getting set-up on a regular thermal scan program, can set your mind at ease in knowing that a knowledgeable and competent thermographer has got you covered.

  • What is Involved From the Initial Phone Call to the End of the Scan?

    • When you call us, we will talk about your needs and develop a plan of action to help you in the best way we can. After discerning the extent of the proposed scan, we will figure out a proposed price estimate and get that to you. Payment for the scan is due upon the date of the scan.

      • Once on site, we will hand you a Thermal Imaging Agreement for you to sign. This agreement states what we do and, sometimes more importantly, what we don't do/cannot do, along with the process the scan will take.

    • We will arrange to meet you on site, conduct the scan, talk about what might be going on, and answer any and all questions.

      • If there are components at the site that we need to scan, like electrical systems, machinery, HVAC components, etc., we will work side by side with your onsite personnel (most common in a commercial/industrial setting), and/or other qualified professionals--like licensed electricians, for example--so that the best knowledge and safety practices are put in place and practiced.

    • Once the scan is finished, we will go back to our offices and compile a report, one that includes detailed findings, including both thermal and digital images, and we will get that to you in a timely manner. We are always available for questions and comments after the scan.

  • Have Questions Now? Curious, and Want to Find Out More? Call Us! Any of us at Kentucky Thermal Alliance will be happy to answer any and all questions, at any time. We are here to serve you in the best way we can!
